License plate for Veterans

Application for Veteran's License Plate Eligibility Certification

On November 10, 2005, the Quebec government announced the following :

Quebec Premier, Jean Charest, is proud to announce, along with the minister of Transport and minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region, Michel Després, that the Quebec government will offer veterans an exclusive license plate, starting January 1st 2006.

"The Quebec government make this significant gesture today to recognize in a special way the commitment of Quebecers who served our country to defend the values that govern us", the Prime Minister said.

"This commemorative license plate, exclusive to veterans, will be identical to the plate already offered to Quebecers but a red and black poppy will be added in the center of the plate", said the minister of Transport, who asked the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec to take the necessary measures to offer this new plate to Quebec veterans.

This license plate will be offered to all those who meet the eligibility requirements set out by the Royal Canadian Legion. The Premier added that this announcement, the day before Remembrance Day 2005, marks in a unique way the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Since April 2009, the SAAQ offers veterans who own a motorcycle, the new distinctive license plate.

The record of the CAR and MOTO plate is the responsibility of the Quebec Command. But it would be important to inform motorcyclists veterans that if they already hold a plate with a CAR poppy, the SAAQ will issue them free of charge their MOTO plate; to do so, a form is available since March 21, 2009 in all SAAQ office. For others who do not have a CAR plate, they must complete the same form by indicating they want the MOTO plate. An administrative fee of $ 10.00 will be charged.

As soon as a veteran is notified that he or she must pay for a license plate renewal, for a vehicule plate number that is of the following types (ABC 123 or 123 ABC or 100 H 100), a veteran's eligibility request form must be sent to the Royal Canadian Legion, Quebec Command, for both the car and motorcycle license plates. Quebec Command will confirm the veteran's eligibility and forward the request to the SAAQ. SAAQ will then proceed in mailing, at the veteran's home address, the requested license plate.

If a veteran wishes to replace their veteran's plate because of loss, damage, or theft, the veteran must present themself to their local SAAQ point of service in order to request a new veteran's plate.

Autoroute du Souvenir

The section of the A-20 from its beginning at the Ontario-Quebec border to the Turcot Interchange is (in addition to the A-20 designation) officially named the Autoroute du Souvenir (Remembrance Highway) in honour of fallen soldiers. Signage includes a red poppy on a green background.

Highway of Heroes

Ontario's Macdonald-Cartier Freeway, better known as Highway 401, is the main transportation corridor linking Windsor with Quebec City, and crosses through some of the most densely populated areas in Canada. In 2007, a 170 kilometre portion of the highway stretching from CFB Trenton to the Don Valley Parkway (and later Keele Street) in Toronto was designated the Highway of Heroes, reflecting its use as the route for funeral convoys carrying fallen Canadian Forces service men and women from CFB Trenton to the coroner's office in Toronto.
